See how issues facing companies could affect the investments that support members’ pensions, and what Railpen is doing about them.
During 2025 and 2026, Railpen continued to work with companies and use its influence as an investor on issues that could affect their long-term financial performance.
Some of these issues may feel far removed from your pension. But how a company is run, how it treats its workforce and how it manages new technology can all affect how it performs over time. That can matter for the investments that help support members’ pensions.
How Railpen undertook sustainable ownership in the last year
Railpen can respond in different ways when it identifies issues that could affect companies and their long-term financial performance.
Examples from 2025/26 include:
- talking to Amazon about how it manages AI and robotics
- voting for clearer information about fair pay at Next
- working with other investors to support fairer voting rights
- selling its investment in Nestlé after concerns remained unresolved
What members told us about sustainable ownership
More than 1,500 members responded to Railpen’s latest Sustainable Ownership survey.
Their top priorities included fair pay for workers, reliable company reporting, making sure company boards can be held to account, how well companies treat their workforce and the responsible use of new technology such as AI.
Members also told us they wanted more practical examples and clearer explanations of how sustainable ownership relates to their pension. They wanted less investment jargon and a shorter, easier-to-read review too.
That feedback has helped make the latest Sustainable Ownership Member Review shorter, clearer and more focused on what members want to know.
Railpen’s investment decisions continue to be guided by its responsibility to achieve good financial outcomes for members.
