Make your will for free this month

Sep 30, 2025
Railway Benefit Fund and our pension administrator, Railpen, are offering you the chance to make your will for free this October.

Writing a will is the only way to ensure your final wishes for your estate are fulfilled. It is a chance to remember people and causes you care about in life and can help avoid unnecessary confusion and stress for loved ones at an already difficult time.

Between 1 and 31 October 2025, Railway Benefit Fund charity, supported by Railpen, is providing a free will writing service for retired railways workers, and their families.

This means you can create a basic will, or update an existing one, at no cost to you.

The service will be delivered by will writing specialists Bequeathed, with the option to create your will online, or over the phone if you prefer.

Both services include support and guidance throughout, with the option to meet with a solicitor if a more complex will is required.

Your RPS pension won’t be covered by your will – you still need to make your nominations

Please remember your will cannot cover any death benefits payable from your Railways Pension Scheme (RPS) pension.

Who benefits from your pension, and exactly what they get is based on the Scheme rules and the decisions of the Trustee.

By making a nomination, you can tell the Trustee where you’d like any lump sum death benefits from your pension to go if you die before you claim them.  It’s quick and easy to do this by logging into your myRPS account and going to the ‘My Pension’ section, then ‘My Nominations’.

Alternatively, you can complete and return a paper copy of the nomination form.

Please remember to keep your nominations up to date if/when your circumstances change.

You can learn more about how RPS death benefits work on the dedicated reporting a member’s death page.
